L’attrait romantique, pittoresque et dramatique de la chrétienté médiévale a fourni à Richard Wagner, après « Tannhäuser », « Lohengrin ». Il s’agit d’un opéra romantique en trois actes créé en 1850 à Weimar sous la direction de Liszt, fervent défenseur de la nouvelle musique la plus vitale de son époque.
La « Procession d’Elsa à la cathédrale » intervient à la fin de l’acte II, lorsqu’Elsa est sur le point de se marier avec le chevalier, dont on apprendra plus tard qu’il s’agit de Lohengrin, le « chevalier du Saint Graal ». L’arrangeur néerlandais Gerard Posch a transcrit cette partie solennelle de l’opéra pour orchestre symphonique.
